Tick borne encephalitis

Tick-borne meningoencephalitis or Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection of the central nervous system. TBE is the most frequent infection of central nervous system in the Czech Republic. The occurrence of the TBE is limited on endemic areas. It has a seasonal feature (from April to November). Annually in the Czech Republic there are reported 400-1039 cases with the incidence 5,9/10ex5 inhabitants. The virus can infect the brain, the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord or both. It is transmitted by the bite of infected tick. Specific virostatic treatment does not exist so far. The availability of an effective vaccine helps us to prevent this severe illness. Tick borne encephalitis vaccine is available as Encepur and FSME-IMMUN.
